While the decision had already been made to cancel the popular Coloma Glad Peach Festival, the City of Coloma is promising that “summer will not be forgotten” in the Paw Paw Lake neighborhood.
In fact, Coloma Mayor Marsha Hammond has announced a series of activities designed to assure that 2021 will be the “Summer Not Forgotten,” in her fair city, with celebrations in the community’s central business district this summer.
Mayor Hammond says, “It has been a tough year and a half for everyone. As COVID lingered on, the Glad Peach Festival Committee made the very difficult decision to cancel this year’s event once again due in part to the uncertainty of COVID restrictions.” However, she adds, “In true can-do fashion, a committee was pulled together with a variety of volunteers including local business owners and representatives, the Chamber of Commerce, city residents as well as several City Commissioners to plan and bring family-friendly events to the City of Coloma throughout the summer of 2021 in the hopes of making it a special summer and not another summer forgotten.”
This dedicated group of volunteers is working towards offering the following events:
- Summer Solstice 5K Walk/Run — June 18, 2021 at 7:00 pm
- Christmas in July — July 17, 2021
- Eats in the Street — August 6-7, 2021
- Car Show and Pancake Breakfast — August 8, 2021
Hammond tells us, “The City of Coloma has many great amenities for all to enjoy and these events are a way to bring people to the community as well as support our small businesses that have been hit hard by the pandemic,” adding, “This is what community is all about. This team is working to bring these events to the community with little to no budget.”
City Commissioner Jamie Balkin shared that the first event is being held in partnership with SWMI RACERS, reporting, “The City is proud to be one of the sponsors of this unique event that will benefit the Coloma Athletic Boosters. The event is a Twilight 5K run/walk that will start at 7:00 pm on the eve of the Summer Solstice.”
Balkin notes, “So many races are normally held first thing in the morning, I love that we are partnering to bring a unique experience to those wishing to participate. The course weaves throughout town and highlights our amenities.” For more information or to sign up, click this link: http://runsignup.com/summersolstice5k or http://swmiracers.org.
