The 14th annual Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Day Rally will be held at the Michigan Capitol Tuesday. Emily Schuster-Wachsberger, who organizes the event for the Children’s Trust Fund, tells WSJM News there will be presentations and the planting of pinwheels near the Capitol to highlight the ongoing issue of child abuse and neglect.
“We have wonderful speeches,” Schuster-Wachsberger said. “This year we’re honored to have the lieutenant governor, and we’ve got a Republican representative, a Democratic representative because we’re bipartisan. We have other speakers, we’re giving out an award, and we’re having a children’s choir.”
Schuster-Wachsberger says there were nearly 16,000 child abuse complaints in Michigan in 2021 and more than 24,000 identified victims. That’s an average of 67 victims per day. The Children’s Trust Fund works to help prevent child abuse. Schuster-Wachsberger says the best way to prevent child abuse and neglect is to provide families with resources.
