‘Cabaret’ opens June 15 at GhostLight Theatre

The Tony-award winning musical Cabaret (Kander & Ebb) opens Thursday, June 15th and runs through Sunday June 25th at The GhostLight Theatre. Directed by GhostLight General Manager and Artistic Director Paul Mow with choreography by Paige Mulick and Orchestra Direction by Joshua Goines, Cabaret will mark the 2nd production of the 2023 GhostLight Theatre summer season.

Cabaret immerses an audience deeply into the seedy nightlife and underbelly of the Kit Kat Club in 1930s Berlin, just on the eve of Hitler’s rise to power. Based on a book by Christopher Isherwood, CABARET follows the stories of cabaret singer Sally Bowles and American novelist Clifford Bradshaw as well as the nightclub performers that they interact with as they are all caught up in the swirling maelstrom of a changing society.

Cabaret is such an important piece in the canon of musical theatre,” says stage director and Artistic Director Paul Mow. “Not only is it a Broadway classic, but It manages to tell an incredibly important cautionary tale as fascism looms as a potential path for societies throughout our world even today.”

The cast of Cabaret includes Meggie Anderson as Sally Bowles, Braden Allsion as Emcee, Brady West as Cliff Bradshaw, Jodie Wilson as Fraulein Schneider, Michael Riggenbach as Herr Schultz, Abby Hosinski as Fraulein Kost, Joel Smiedendorf as Ernst Ludwig, Wes Shenker as Max, Doug Peterson as Customs Officer.  The Kit Kat Dancers include Peighton Mooney as Rosie, Alyssa Hyska as Lulu, Abbi Kalin as Frenchie, Kelly Collins as Texas (6/15-18), Paige Mulick as Texas (6/22-25), Emilie Kurtz as Helga, Zach Teadt as Bobby and T.J. Nichols as Victor.

“The GhostLight Theatre’s black box space is especially suited to fully immerse our audience in the sordid depths of the Kit Kat Club,” Mow said. “We look forward to the emotional impact that this production will have on our audiences.”

Rounding out the creative team, is Andrew Sawyer (Scenic Design), Kelly Collins (Assistant Director), Rye Tacke (Stage Manager), Beth Ward (Costume Design), along with set builders Ed Brunner, Ed Staude, Dan Williams and Will Hays. The GhostLight Theatre is also pleased to have two BFA candidate students from Western Michigan University on staff this summer, Will Hays is majoring in Scenic Design and Collin Wagner is a Lighting Design major.

“We couldn’t be more excited about our fourth summer season here at The GhostLight Theatre,” Mow said. “These particular shows are sure to take our audiences on three very different journeys of exploration, love, humor, heartache and self-awareness.”

The final production of the GhostLight Theatre season will be the contemporary musical love story Once based on the award winning film of the same name, starring Dan Maxon and Meghan Pelkey, stage directed by Spencer Diedrick with Musical Direction by Burke Lokey, St. Joseph High School Orchestra Director.
