Business Owners Offered Disability Disclosure Workshop

If you own and operate a business in Michigan’s Great Southwest and are concerned about your responsibilities regarding employee disabilities — there’s an upcoming workshop designed to help you deal with all of the ins and out to stay on the right side of the law.

Disability Network Southwest Michigan is hosting a free workshop titled Employee Disclosure: What to do when an employee discloses a disability.  The workshop is designed to help employers understand their responsibilities when an employee discloses a disability. Topics covered will include:

  • Employment provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Under what conditions an employee must disclose a disability
  • Why they may not want to
  • How to determine what a “reasonable accommodation” in the workplace is

The workshop is slated to be held on Tuesday, October 29th from 9:00 – 10:30 AM at Disability Network’s office located at 2900 Lakeview Avenue in St. Joseph. The workshop is free; however, pre-registration is required by contacting Miranda Grunwell at grunwellm@dnswm.org or (269) 345-1516 x 120. Disability Network routinely offers disability disclosure workshops during October when the Department of Labor observes National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Annually, that occasion celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and educates the community about the value of a workforce inclusive of the skills and talents people with disabilities have.

Disability Network’s disability disclosure workshops are frequently geared toward employees; however, this workshop is for employers to better understand disability employment regulations and best practices.

Lewis Whalen, Program Director at Disability Network, says, “This is an important topic for all employers to have an understanding of; the information we are covering in this workshop is appropriate for human resource professionals of larger organizations and small business owners alike. Disability Network is not only a resource for people with disabilities but for businesses and other organizations in our community who need information about disability.”

Founded in 1981 by a small group of disability advocates, Disability Network Southwest Michigan educates and connects people with disabilities to the community resources they need to live independently and advocates for social change.

Disability Network’s advocacy work is focused on creating communities that value disability as human diversity, free of attitudinal barriers, where all people benefit with full access and inclusion. Learn more about Disability Network Southwest Michigan online at www.dnswm.org.
