Coming up August 10 through August 13 is the National Blueberry Festival in South Haven. The South Haven Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Jennifer Sistrunk tells us the 60th annual event celebrates the area’s agricultural history. South Haven has the largest concentration of blueberry growers in the world, with more than 18,000 acres of blueberry farms within a 50-mile radius. Sistrunk says there will be a whole lot going on that weekend.
“They have concerts down by the riverfront, we have the craft fair, we’ve got the Bobby Walker Basketball Tournament, we’ve got a 5K, we’ve got the pie eating contest at Riverfront Park,” Sistrunk said.
Sistrunk says there will also be plenty of blueberries to eat. The best way to eat a lot of them is to enter the pie eating contest, which she says is her favorite event of the festival. The National Blueberry Festival is one of the country’s oldest continuously running fruit festivals. Sistrunk says they call it the national festival due to the area’s leading status as a blueberry grower in the country.
