We’re expected to see some pretty big waves on Lake Michigan this week.
National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Steinwedel tells us big waves are coming as part of a busy weather pattern.
“As we get into Thursday and Friday, we’re predicting a large, strong low pressure system to develop over the central Great Lakes, and that will generate some pretty impressive waves,” Steinwedel said. “We have a wave model that generally is giving us waves in that 10 to 15 foot range as early as Thursday and really continuing, it looks like, into Friday.”
Steinwedel says it’ll be a breezy and rainy week. With 15-foot waves in the lake, everyone’s advised to stay off the piers. That’s not all.
“With the boaters and whatnot, just keep an eye on the forecast because obviously you need to be prepared for a large wave like that if you’re going out.”
Steinwedel says waves of this height aren’t rare this time of year, but people should be aware to take extra precautions if going near the lake. Such wave action can also bring with it an increased change of shoreline erosion, but Steinwedel says with the lake’s water level relatively low at this time, he doesn’t expect much of that.
Things should start to calm down heading into the weekend.
