It happens virtually every summer. Household chemicals and other things that need to be gotten rid of end up filling the garage, basement or cabinets around the house, and just end up accumulating there to the breaking point. Fortunately, in Michigan’s Great Southwest we have the option of recycling or otherwise disposing of such unwanted materials easily courtesy of the Berrien County Parks Department’s environmental team.
This is a great time to clean out your home, garage, basement, and under the sink and take those unwanted household chemicals and electronics to be recycled and disposed of properly. The next Berrien County Community Recycling Event is slated for Saturday, September 22nd at Silver Beach County Park, located at 101 Broad Street, below the bluff, in St. Joseph. The event will run from 9 am that morning until 1 pm that afternoon.
It’s your ideal opportunity to protect your family’s health and the health of the environment by bringing items such as the following unwanted items to the event:
- Yard and garden chemicals
- Used oil
- Old gasoline
- Unused medications
- Medical needles/sharps
- Spent batteries
- Spray cans
- Half used oil-based paint
- Electronics
There is a fee of $10 per computer monitor and $20 per TV, however all other accepted items are free to drop off. The event is coordinated by the Berrien County Parks Department. While there are no fees other than those for TVs and monitors, donations are gratefully accepted to help offset the costs of hosting the event.
Please note that latex paint will NOT be accepted. Latex paint can be recycled at Ace Hardware in St. Joseph and Stevensville for a small fee. Or, latex paint can be dried out and placed in with regular curbside trash at any time of the year.
