Berrien County’s Women’s Service League has announced a new executive board as it enters its 90th year. The league tells us more below:
Berrien County’s Women’s Service League is starting its 90th year of servicing the community with a new Executive Board. This new board includes President Amy Wells, Vice-President Roxanne Dirnberger, Secretary Carrie Kutchie, and Treasurer Janene Donarski.
“We want this year’s focus to be on re-connecting and re-engaging with each other so we can better serve the needs of our community. We look forward to getting back to the signature events that WSL is known for hosting.” said President Amy Wells.
Benefactors of these service projects in 2021-2022 will include Girls on the Run Southwest Michigan, The Avenue – Cora Lamping Center and additional community outreach partners.
Wells shared a few highlights from WSL’s activities last year. These included:
- The Scholarship Committee awarded to Bailey Bickel of Niles High School a $1000 Athena Scholarship; an annual community-service based scholarship for high school seniors
- Operations Coats collected and distributed coats to families in need in Berrien County
- Charity Ball committee lead a successful gift card and needed items drive for the Cora Lamping Center
- Operation Community Service raised over $3000 for meals delivered to local hospital and frontline staff and for shelf stable food for Meals on Wheels of Southwest Michigan
- Donations received and care packages assembled for home-bound seniors and delivered by a WSL member who is a home health nurse
- Several members went to the hospital and chalked encouraging pictures and words on the sidewalks to show our appreciation.
- Delivery of cookies to BCHD workers at vaccine clinics
- Collection and delivery of homemade masks to Salvation Army
- Assembled team kits, lap counter kits and snack boxes for Girls on the Run SWMI
- Successful collection drive for local Veterans Affairs Office including handmade cards from SJHS Key Club
- Sock Drive benefitting the Salvation Army and Emergency Services
- Supported our local teaches at Logan Center, Riverside School and Lighthouse Education Center with gift baskets
- Collected pillows for God’s Hands 4 Kids supporting local children in foster care
- Members volunteered for the Steelhead Triathlon
- Donated funds went to Camp Hope Mike Wagner Memorial
- Provided appreciation lunch to the staff at the Cora Lamping Center
The League which has over 40 members consists of multiple committees that work on projects and service. Included are the Executive, Charity Ball, Charity Selection/Service, Hospitality, Operation Coats, Scholarship, and Social Media.
Service doesn’t end after members complete a commitment to 10 years of service. The League has over 100 members who continue to support the group and stay involved.
Women interested in joining Women’s Service League can obtain a membership application by sending an email to wslpink@gmail.com. Members will serve on a committee, attend meetings, and participate in service projects and fundraisers. Membership applications for the upcoming year are due no later than November 15.
