Berrien County Treasurer holding payment plan meetings around the county

Berrien County Treasurer Shelly Weich is planning a series of meetings around the county to help property owners in danger of foreclosure get caught back up on their taxes.

Weich tells us there are about 1,600 property owners still behind on their 2022 taxes. She’s offering them a chance to make an arrangement.

“These meetings are set up to help those that are facing foreclosure on March 31st of this year,” Weich said. “A number of them have unpaid 2022 and prior taxes, so this gives them an opportunity to come see me at their local municipality and set up possibly a payment arrangement or make payments to me in order to avoid that foreclosure on March 31.”

Weich says she’s heading out to communities throughout Berrien County for these meetings because a lot of the property owners who fall behind are elderly or disabled and can’t travel to St. Joseph. The payment plans she’ll work out with them vary depending on a household’s income.

Weich says by the time the March 31 deadline for 2022 taxes arrives, it’s likely only around 125 properties will actually be foreclosed.

The meetings, set to take place between January 8 and March 26 in several locations, will be on a first come-first serve basis, and no appointment is needed. You can find the full schedule right here.
