Benton Harbor: Sale price lowered on iconic hotel

The iconic House of David Hotel just off Main Street in Benton Harbor, also known as Mary’s Fireproof Hotel, is for sale — still — but at the newly reduced price of $550,000.

Chris Siriano, broker/owner of Siriano Real Estate Company, the listing office for the site, points out there’s been a lot of focus on redeveloping the area around the hotel and he’s hopeful to find a buyer soon. Our friends at WSJM.com posted this video interview with Siriano (click to view).

When the price was reduced, the listing was put up on Facebook again about a week ago and Siriano said a lot of activity followed — more than 4,500 page views at last check.

Siriano said well-heeled investors and developers from around the country have reached out for more information. It will take quite a bit of capital to renovate the property.

Even though the structure is solid with concrete bricks and pillars made by members of the House of David and a relatively new roof, the inside is dilapidated and in need of a total renovation.

The original plan was for the hotel to be constructed to seven stories, but the first phase stopped at four stories and never restarted.

Siriano said there are additional ornate, concrete pillars that were made during the original construction if the new owners want to add them to the facade. They’re currently stored in someone’s barn on Red Arrow highway.
