The beach flags are now flying at all seven city beaches in South Haven.
South Haven Area Emergency Services put the flags out Wednesday. They’re intended to let beachgoers know whether it’s safe to go swimming.
The city says a green flag means the water is calm and swimming conditions are good. However, it’s still important to use caution.
A yellow flag means swimmers should use extreme caution because there’s a potentially high surf and possible danger.
A red flag means everyone should stay out of the water. There are strong currents, it’s dangerous, and anyone who tries going swimming when there’s a red flag posted could get a $1,000 fine.
Also, stay off the piers when the red flags are out. Going on the pier when there’s a red flag can also result in a $1,000 fine.
