High school students interested in pursuing the arts can benefit from the newest scholarship being offered by the Berrien Community Foundation.

BCF Program Director Susan Matheny tells us the Wood Family Summer Arts Scholarship has been created to help students attend summer art camps.

“Doug Woods was talking to us about it and he and his wife, Jill, they just really believe that arts education is critical to education, to social and personal growth, and really builds a skill that can bring folks lifelong joy,” Matheny said.

Matheny says the new scholarships are $1,500 each and will be awarded to two students each summer. Whether the high schooler wants to go to Interlochen, Drum Corps International, Western Michigan University’s Seminar, or any other arts camp, this is their opportunity.

“Students can go for anything, including, but not limited to instrumental or vocal music, for dance, for visual arts like painting or sculpting, or photography, and theater arts.”

Matheny says one scholarship will give preference to a Lakeshore High School student, while the other will be available to any high school student in Berrien County.

The deadline to apply for this year is March 15, and you can find the application page right here.
