ARS Gallery in Benton Harbor has announced an opening reception for “Subliminal,” a new exhibition of works by artist Emma Neuser.

The reception takes place on Friday, August 2, from 6 to 8 p.m., and will include appetizers, wine, a chance to meet Neuser and live music by local musician Aiden Schnell.

“My current style of work follows the idea of what you make when you’re not paying attention, but following your instincts,” Neuser said. “It’s the most raw expression of the natural self with no strings or imagery attached, just what lies beneath the surface.”

Neuser is a self-taught oil painter who has earned local and national recognition, including in the Scholastic Art Awards and at the Kalamazoo Institute of Art Regional Art Show. She has taught art at ARS Gallery, where she is currently serving as an intern, and at Moreau Primary School in Kyarusozi, Uganda. Following the completion of her internship at ARS this fall, Neuser plans to further her artistic experience in Los Angeles before beginning her studies in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Fine Arts program.

Anna Russo-Sieber of ARS Gallery-Arts & Culture Center said that the gallery features interns like Neuser once a year.

“As educators, our goal is to provide our interns with hands-on experience and exposure to prepare for a future in the arts,” Russo-Sieber said. “Emma is a young, talented artist with a remarkable career ahead of her, and we’re thrilled to present her first solo show.”

“Subliminal” will be on display at ARS Gallery-Arts & Culture Center through September 5. For more information, call ARS at 269-277-5090 or visit their website.
