Armed Robber Hits Truck Stop

A midnight heist at a Bertrand Township truck stop has Berrien County Sheriff's Deputies asking for the public's help in identifying the armed robber who held the place up just minutes after the midnight hour today, Sunday, August 14, 2016.

Sheriff's Detective Sergeant Joseph Margherone says that the confrontation took place at JD's Truck Stop at 1655 Mayflower Road in Bertrand Township, when "what is believed to be a white male or light skinned Hispanic male," held up the night clerk cashier at the truck stop.

Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the robbery to contact them at 269-983-7141 at extension 7224 or by email at detectives@berriencounty.org.

Det. Sgt. Margherone says that the robber is approximately 5-foot-5 with a thin build. He has a tattoo on the inside of the right forearm, and was wearing a red shirt believed to be from the brand "Famous Stars & Straps," as well as red pants, and a red & white hat.  The detective shared the surveillance camera photo shown below to help in apprehending the thief. In the photo, the thief appears to have a bandana covering the lower part of his face.

The gunman was armed with a pistol in the hold up and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash following the stick-up. Nobody was injured in the robbery, but police are still searching for the gunman. The Buchanan Police Department and Pokagon Tribal Police also assisted the Berrien County Sheriff's Department in investigating the crime this morning.
