The Pokagon Band of Pottawatomi is planning its annual Kee Boon Mein Kaa Pow Wow for September 2 and September 3. The band’s Adela Galzan-Guerrero tells us it’s a celebration open to everyone that will explore culture while having fun.
“A lot of planning goes into a pow wow, and during that time of all our planning, we’re really thinking about how we can make people feel welcome,” Galzan-Guerrero said.
Guests are coming in from all over the country, some as far away as Alaska. Galzan-Guerrero says there will be crafts, a whole lot of dancing, and food.
“From traditional foods like wild rice, and also something more contemporary like fry bread. It’s all Native foods and homemade. So, it’s really delicious. If you’re new to a pow wow, I suggest trying these.”
Guerrero says the dancers compete for cash prizes. Everyone’s invited to the Pow Wow, which is free to attend. It will be held at the Pokagon Rodgers Lake Campground on Sink Road in Dowagiac on Labor Day weekend. You can find out more right here.
