For those caring for someone with dementia or memory loss, new help is available.
Region IV Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is hosting a three-part Dementia Caregiving Workshop from 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesdays Dec. 3, 10 and 17 at the Campus for Creative Aging, 2920 Lakeview Ave., St. Joseph.
The Dementia Caregiving Workshop is a three-session program for those caring for a person with dementia, Alzheimer’s or memory loss. It assists with reducing caregiving stress by providing useful tools and information.
Learn how to:
- Understand basic information about dementia and its impact on brain function
- Communicate more effectively with someone who has dementia
- Recognize stages of dementia
- Provide meaningful daily activities based on your loved one’s interests and abilities
- Better understand and address dementia-related behaviors
- Create a positive caregiving environment
- Learn strategies and benefits of self-care
- Build your network of support
“Attendees do not need to attend all three sessions to get value out of this workshop,” Julie Schwarz, education coordinator at AAA, said. “Caregivers who have attended even just one session have reported having more confidence caring for their loved one.”
The person you’re caring for does not need an official dementia diagnosis nor do they need to live locally for you to attend.
This class is free and open to the public, though registration is required.
