Registrations and donations are being taken now for a new fun run being planned in Berrien Springs for next month.

Sylvester and Mars Elementary School physical education teacher Emily Laukus tells us the first Shamrock Dash 5k will be on Saturday, April 26th. The run is to raise funds for the Sylvester PE program, the Sylvester Runners Club, and the Sylvester Rockership Team.

How did the event come together?

“Really, it’s geared towards trying to show our students that there are multiple different opportunities, whether it’s through the school or through a community event, to get active and to have some fun,” Laukus said.

Laukus tells us the Sylvester Rockership Team gives kids a chance to work on personal goals, whether academically or behaviorally. The Runners Club has about 80 students taking part.

“It’s free for all students. They just have to sign up and they meet at the back. We’re so blessed we have a running track on our playground and meet back there and the kids keep track of their laps. We talk about running form. We talk about how important it is to be active.”

The Shamrock Dash 5k will be held in Berrien Springs, starting at Sylvester Elementary and possibly using part of the Berrien County Youth Fairgrounds. Laukus invites the entire community to take part.
