The new free public Wi-Fi in Benton Harbor has proven to be a hit.

Cornerstone Alliance launched the Wi-Fi program last year after obtaining a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to do so. There are now free Wi-Fi hotspots installed in heavily-trafficked areas throughout the city, including large housing developments, the Boys and Girls Club Youth Campus, and several parks.

Since the Wi-Fi was started, Cornerstone says people have indeed been using it. According to its statistics, the free Wi-Fi has had a total of 1,657 users since June, averaging about 98 users per day. The average usage per user has been 2.87 gigabytes.

Cornerstone Alliance says the Wi-Fi project “is empowering our community with greater access to education, work, and connection.”
