South Haven is getting ready to ring in the new year with its annual New Year’s Eve Celebration, set for December 31.

South Haven Van Buren County Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Jennifer Sistrunk tells us the celebration is a major event each year, attracting a crowd of thousands. The fun starts at 3 p.m. when they close the streets of downtown South Haven. The day will include a scavenger hunt, a new year’s party at the Mitten Children’s Museum, mechanical bull rides, and trolley rides around town

“And then the big thing, of course, is the thousand beach balls that we drop at midnight,” Sistrunk said. “Then we also have a fireworks show at midnight as well. So those are the big things. We’ve got Michigan Autobots that are coming back. They’re big robot-looking creatures and they’re a lot of fun and they will be back this year as well.”

Sistrunk says New Year’s Eve is always special in South Haven.

“It’s a really unique experience to have the entire town closed. The streets only closed for Icebreaker and New Year’s Eve.”

Sistrunk says downtown businesses will be offering special promotions and giveaways with things like hot chocolate and snacks available.
