Dee (Komarnizki) Berry, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) from Sister Lakes, has been elected as the new president for the Michigan Association of Nurse Anesthetists (MANA) for the 2024-25 term.
Berry, an independent anesthesia contractor based in Sister Lakes, was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She is a 1987 graduate of Sault Area High School and a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. She is the first Native American to lead the MANA.
“My heritage teaches me that wisdom comes from those who walked before us, and courage comes from within,” Berry said. “As MANA’s first Native American president, I am honored to carry forward the knowledge of past leaders and the strength of our community as we embrace new opportunities together.”
During her acceptance speech, Berry shared a traditional story of a young woman guided by a spirit to an uncharted valley. Just as the woman relied on wisdom from her guide to navigate challenges, Berry emphasized that during her tenure as MANA president, she will seek the guidance and experience of past leaders, her spirit guides, to forge new paths for future CRNAs.
“I feel so proud and privileged to be able to serve our remarkable community of Michigan nurse anesthetists,” Berry said. “The healthcare landscape is changing rapidly, and our role as CRNAs is more crucial than ever. We must be strong advocates for our profession, unwavering in our support for our members, and continue to be relentlessly focused on patient safety and exceptional outcomes.”
CRNAs are highly trained healthcare professionals who independently provide anesthesia and related care for patients undergoing surgical, therapeutic, diagnostic, and obstetrical procedures
During her tenure, Berry will prioritize strong advocacy by ensuring CRNAs remain recognized and respected in healthcare; professional development by providing continuous learning opportunities, from workshops to online courses, ensuring members stay at the forefront of advancements in anesthesia; and fostering a thriving community by emphasizing collaboration, mentorship, and leadership development to create a network where every member feels valued and empowered.
Berry’s career in healthcare began as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician in Southeast Michigan. She subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Oakland University, followed by a Master of Science in Anesthesia and a Diploma in Anesthesia from DePaul University/Northshore University HealthSystem, and culminating in a Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice degree from the University of Michigan-Flint.
