The Michigan Maritime Museum will once again serve as a broadcast venue for participants to watch the livestream of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society’s Annual Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Ceremony.
The in-person memorial service held Sunday, November 10 at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in the Upper Peninsula at Whitefish Point, MI, is closed to the public and is a solemn event primarily intended for the families of those lost on the Fitzgerald which sank in 1975.
Recognizing the interest from the wider community, the Shipwreck Society decided to livestream the service to ensure the memorial can still be experienced by many whether at venues such as the Michigan Maritime Museum or from home.
The livestream will allow the public to participate virtually while maintaining the intimate atmosphere for the families attending in person. “This combination of preserving the event’s personal nature while expanding access is a thoughtful way to honor the memory of those lost and to include those who wish to pay their respects from afar,” according to Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society’s Corey Adkins.
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum has greatly upgraded their technology this year to accommodate the increasing number of people connecting to the livestream.
Doors will open for the livestream event at the Maritime Museum at 6:30pm on Sunday, November 10 th with the ceremony beginning around 7pm and expected to be completed just after 8pm. The livestream is free and open to the public.
