A national retailer is calling it quits in Benton Township a month after declaring bankruptcy.
Big Lots revealed today that it will close its Benton Harbor store at 1950 Pipestone Road, probably within a few weeks. A short announcement from the local management said they had just recently been informed of the shut down and would sell out existing merchandise. However, no firm dates were given for a store closing.

It is with great sadness that we announce the news. We received confirmation on 10/3, that the benton harbor location has been added to the closing list. We begin the process on Friday 10/12/2024. It’s been a great run and we are beyond grateful for each and every one of you over the years. To save the millions of questions, we will remain open until all product has been sold. As of now, we do not have an exact end date. This is all new to us, so we will try to share as much information as we can as we get it. Again, thank you all so much!
Big Lots is a general merchandise discount store chain headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. It has over 1200 stores across the country. Last month, Big Lots declared bankruptcy and vowed to close 300 stores in an effort to survive the financial reorganization.
Big Lots traces its history back almost 60 years, when it was known as ‘Consolidated Stores’ and was a regional competitor to stores like K-Mart, Zayre and Bel-Scot. It had a location off M-139 in Benton Harbor for years, before moving several years ago to what was once a K-Mart store along Pipestone Road near Applebee’s.
There was no immediate word on how many jobs would be lost in the Big Lots closing in Benton Township.
