The cities of New Buffalo and Bangor are recipients of the 2023 Community Water Fluoridation 50 Year Award for their efforts to help protect the dental health of residents via the water system.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says the awards are going to seven municipalities in the state this year. They’re given out by the American Dental Association, the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The award recipients are recognized for continuously maintaining the amount of fluoride in their drinking water for the prevention of tooth decay in adults and children. The award is given to those communities that achieved excellence in community water fluoridation for 50 consecutive years, starting in 1973. That would be Bangor and New Buffalo.

Also receiving the awards are Allegan, Blissfield, Boyne City, Manchester, and Portage.
