The Southwest Michigan Car Collectors Club has made a donation to the Berrien County Veterans Services office, thanks to its annual car show in Watervliet.

Speaking to the Berrien County Board of Commissioners Thursday, the club’s Chuck Carpenter and Les Fairbanks said they used to donate the proceeds from the car show to the VA hospital in Battle Creek, but then they realized there was a more local option.

“We thought, we’re holding this in Berrien County, we can benefit the Berrien County veterans. Our sponsors think a lot of it, keeping it local. We think it’s great and we intend on keeping doing it if we can. Hopefully, we’ll come back next year with a little more.”

The group handed off a check for $2,070 to Berrien County Veterans Services Director Maureen Adams. She said last year’s donation went to a program to identify homeless veterans in the county. It provided them with blankets and backpacks with food.

Adams said the office hasn’t decided yet how to spend this year’s donation, but it will be equally as worthy.
