Are you ready to meet your best friend?

The Bissell Pet Foundation, based in Grand Rapids, is sponsoring an Empty the Shelters pet adoption event through the end of July. The Foundation’s Brittany Schlacter says that means you’ll be able to adopt a cat or dog for $50 dollars or less.

“Many of the state’s shelters, they are working to meet the needs of their communities, and right now, that means there’s so many pets that are strays coming in,” Schlacter said. “It’s puppy and kitten season, and while puppies and kittens are adorable, our shelters just don’t have space right now to take as many in as they would want. And we’re seeing that there are so many people who are being forced to surrender their pets due to the housing crisis.”

Bissell will pay part of the the adoption fees for a dog or cat at participating shelters all month. The adopted pets will go home spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, for no more than $50 for the adoption family.

Participating shelters include the Al Van Humane Society in South Haven and Van Buren County Animal Control in Hartford.
