An exploration into the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on daily life, elections, and society is the focus of The South Haven Speaker Series presentation planned for Thursday May 23rd.
The speaker, Sue Ellen Christian, Professor of Communication at Western Michigan University says we can learn how media literacy helps us critically engage with the AI-influenced media.
Professor Christian has a journalist background and is an author of ‘Everyday Media Literacy: An Analog Guide for Your Digital Life’. This is an informed guide on media literacy principles and critical thinking in light of the key issues facing society today. The book covers analyzing and creating media messages to verifying information and understanding online privacy.
Her goal for the evening is to provide a “tool set” to help address the complexities of AI-generated social and print media.
Christian cautions us to “choose what we give our attention to and have variety in our media diet as we navigate this new terrain. By understanding how media shapes our perceptions, we empower ourselves to make informed decisions in an increasingly digital world” she says.
The evening begins at 6:30 pm for a wine and cheese reception, followed by the presentation at 7 pm. Admission is $10, and students attend free of charge.
Speakers’ series programs are held on the South Haven Campus of Lake Michigan College, 125 Veterans Boulevard, East of Menards.
The South Haven Speakers Series is a 501c3 non-profit organization. Approximately three-quarters of the Series budget comes from community donors.
