Salvation Army sets ambitious goal for West Berrien & Van Buren counties

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign is underway. It’s a national effort that happens on a local level – raising money for all the services the local chapter of the Salvation Army provides.

The Salvation Army of Benton Harbor kicked off their 2023 campaign in early November. Their goal this year is to raise $151,400 in West Berrien and Van Buren counties. Among the volunteer groups ringing the bells this season is the Rotary Club of St. Joseph / Benton Harbor.

Rotarian Sean Ebbert from Pearson Construction says he’s been in Rotary for 21 years and he’s helped with the campaign for that entire time.

“The people that gave the most money were probably the people you would expect to give the least. But what a heartwarming, great, holiday experience to have. It’s just really cool to see the people come out and give.”

Ebbert’s advice for people who see the bell ringers – don’t turn and walk the other way.

“There is no pressure. If you’re not interested in giving, there’s no hard feelings. But anything you can give will help. There’s a lot of people in our community in need. It’s a great organization that helps those folks and if you can spare a few bucks, I encourage you to do so.”

The Salvation Army helps with a number of services for people and families in need including transitional care, emergency financial assistance, emergency shelter, seasonal services, casework, Christian education, music and arts programs, daycare, character building programs, and community recreation and education programs.

The bell-ringing happens throughout the holiday season and you can look for the Rotary to be outside Kilwin’s, ringing during the downtown St. Joseph Reindog Parade this Saturday, December 2, on State Street from 10am to 8pm.
