Bringing a New Bookstore to New Buffalo

In the fall of 2020, sisters Jocelyne Tuszynski and Audrey Bock opened a mobile bookstore and plant shop. Their ‘pandemic project’ was fueled by the uncertainty of being able to return to work, and the rising popularity of outdoor markets (once again).

“The idea for Flourish Books & Plants came to me on a boat trip up Michigan’s Coast,” says Audrey. “Every cute little beach town has a bookstore, and I always pop in to buy a new read. New Buffalo used to have one when we were growing up, and when I suggested we start a mobile shop, Jocelyne said, ‘Absolutely: let’s do it’.”

For the past three years, they have operated out of a six by ten foot utility trailer, after adding new flooring, some paint, and installing a few shelves. “It was really crazy how quickly we were able to start,” Jocelyne says. “We zoom-called with the Women’s Business Center, completed all the necessary paperwork and licensing, and started ordering books. Within four weeks of the idea, we were open!”

Flourish Books & Plants set up shop at farmer’s markets, wineries, festivals, cideries, artisan fairs, and the like. Adding houseplants to their inventory early-on increased their customer base, but being an outdoor business, weather played a huge factor in their ability to be open. “I am not a summer girl, and selling outdoors in mid-July was always miserable,” says Jocelyne. “The goal was to eventually find a permanent home for the booknook, and this summer, the opportunity presented itself. I have known Chef Tim Carrigan from Wood, Stock, & Grill for many years, and he offered the indoor space at the old J&J’s Diner in New Buffalo– his food truck company operates out of the kitchen, so the restaurant space was not being used.”

The Flourish Books & Plants Grand Opening will take place on Saturday, November 25th, on Small Business Saturday, from Noon to 4 p.m, at their new home: 17649 US 12, New Buffalo. Flourish offers a generous mix of new, used, and discount books, carefully curated houseplants, and a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

“We are still in the middle of our soft opening,” Jocelyne says. “The holiday pushed back our first big plant order, and we are adding decor and inventory every day, but we would love you to come check out our space!”

After Thanksgiving weekend, the book shop will be open regular hours: Wed-Sat 12pm to 6pm, and Sun 1pm – 4pm. During their Grand Opening, stop in to enjoy light refreshments, enter to win a gift card, and start your holiday shopping!
