SMSO ‘Pop Up Concerts’ to Conclude with Two Downtown Benton Harbor Events

The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra is reminding you that there are still two Pop Up! Concerts remaining to celebrate summer 2023.   SMSO is moving them to a new location!

SMSO explains that each of these concerts is unique and showcases two different small musical ensembles that allow the community to experience an orchestral sound but on a smaller, more intimate scale.

The August 24, 2023 concert will be the first for the SMSO in Benton Harbor for its Pop Up! Concerts. While the SMSO has performed at other venues in the city in the past, this is the first time the small ensembles are featured in Benton Harbor.

The Dwight P. Mitchell City Park is the site of the Thursday, August 24 concert while the August 31 concert will find the SMSO and its musicians at The GhostLight Theatre.

The first is a program featuring classical and modern favorites reimagined for a string quartet will showcase rock and pop covers from a variety of time periods, performed by the KalHAven Strings, an ensemble that was formed in 2014 while they were graduate students at Western Michigan University. Currently the KalHaven Strings serve as the ‘Candlelight Concerts by Fever’ resident string quartet.

The group, consisting of Timothy Cuffman, Megan Healy, Rebecca Boelzner and Brooke Bennett, will perform arrangements of popular music from artists such as Queen, Taylor Swift, James Taylor, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, ABBA, ColdPlay and more!

To end the Pop Up Concert Series for the 2023 summer season, the sweet sounds of a string quartet will be heard from the grounds of the GhostLight Theatre on Thursday, August 31. The quartet of Robbie Herbst, Timothy Cuffman, Brook Bennett and Rebecca Boelzner will perform upbeat and popular pieces for the audience to enjoy.
