New Main Street Oasis to be celebrated Thursday in Watervliet

There will be a ribbon cutting Thursday to celebrate the opening of the new Main Street Oasis in downtown Watervliet. City Manager Danielle Tiedeman tells us the Main Street Oasis is the crowdfunded “pocket park” envisioned by the city and its partners at a previously vacant space.

“It’s been in coordination between Cornerstone Alliance, Wightman engineers, and a lot of donors and crowdfunding to get it done,” Tiedeman said. “It’s just this beautiful little space. There’s a fountain, there’s places to sit and dine and eat. There’s also a covered area and lighting at night. It’s just a beautiful little spot to hang out.”

The city was able to crowdfund $51,000 for the new park, which was matched by the MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places program. That all helped to reach the park’s overall $200,000 cost. Tiedeman says the city could use it for all kinds of events and art installations. The ribbon cutting will be this Thursday starting at 6. It will feature remarks by local leaders, a food truck, and live music. Everyone’s invited.
