Sidewalk under I-94 to connect Red Arrow Highway hotels to Meijer, Aldi area

Visitors staying in hotels north of I-94 at Red Arrow Highway will soon have a safe path to access Meijer and Aldi.

Lincoln Township trustees on Tuesday approved a project that would let the Michigan Department of Transportation build a shared use pathway underneath the I-94 at exit 23.

The 1,500-foot walkway will be 10 feet wide and stretch south from West Marquette Woods Road to St. Joseph Avenue along Red Arrow Highway.

Township supervisor Dick Stauffer says the project will be a part of an MDOT bridge replacement at Exit 23 next year.

“This is a project for significant township improvement … I’m really excited to see this pathway,” Stauffer said. “I’m particularly excited about this part of the project because it removes the existing “goat path” along that part of Red Arrow. I see the path every time I do an exit 23 cleanup. The sidewalk will be a major safety improvement for [visitors] staying at hotels and shopping at Meijer and Aldi.”

The township will not incur any costs at MDOT constructs the pathway, and it will take over ownership and maintenance upon completion. Stauffer says he isn’t yet sure of the exact timeline of the project, only that it’s slated for next year.
