The Avenue Family Network is holding a special fundraiser ahead of Mother’s Day to help support survivors of domestic violence. Chief Strategy Officer Robin McGinnis tells us money raised will go toward supporting the Cora Lamping Center, which is a shelter for those escaping abuse. It has 23 beds and nine rooms.
“A survivor will often visit our center or some kind of services seven times before we’re really able to help them make an impact on their lives,” McGinnis said. “So, the funding that we’re looking for on Mother’s Day is to help the women and children that we serve at the Cora Lamping Center.”
McGinnis says the center gets around 75 to 100 calls per month and is often full. It costs around $800,000 per year to run.
“Sometimes we have a mom come with four or five children, and we put them all together. We have cribs, we have everything that they need. We have a children’s playroom, and outdoor playground.”
McGinnis says some women have to stay there for as long as 90 days. The shelter also provides counseling and legal support. The Avenue Family Network’s Mother’s Day Online Donation Event will start April 30 and run through May 14. You can donate at TheAvenue.ngo.
