The Michigan Department of Transportation will be permanently closing a couple of US-31 exit ramps in Berrien County. Spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us as part of the northbound US-31 repaving project, MDOT will close two of the ramps at US-31 Exit 5 at Niles Buchanan Road. That’s because the two ramps aren’t needed.
“There are on and offramps, essentially straight ramps, from both directions on both Niles Buchanan Road and US-31, but there are also two loop ramps to get on to US-31,” Schirripa said. “One is from westbound Niles Buchanan Road to southbound US-31 and from eastbound Niles Buchanan Road to northbound Us-31, two loop ramps inside, for a total of six ramps. Those two ramps are actually redundant.”
Schirripa says the two loop ramps from Niles Buchanan Road to US-31 will be closed to reduce rebuilding and future maintenance costs. Access to all directions of US-31 and Niles Buchanan Road will be maintained with the four remaining ramps. The closure will happen this Friday.
