Indiana Michigan Power is seeking state permission to construct four new solar power plants. Spokesperson Tracy Warner tells us the plants, all to be located in Indiana, will help the company reach its goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2045.
“For many years, Indiana Michigan Power has been transitioning toward more diverse energy sources to power the homes and businesses that we serve,” Warner said. “We are moving more toward clean, renewable energy and these will provide a lot of clean and renewable energy.”
Warner says these four latest solar farms will help replace lost generating capacity with the closure of I&M’s last coal plant, in Rockport, Indiana. He notes there are more than environmental benefits to going green.
“Many businesses and industries these days really want clean energy, and so this is a positive for new investment and jobs in the region.”
The nearest of the four new plants will be in Elkhart County. Warner says I&M is also seeking proposals for even more wind and solar plants, both in Michigan and in Indiana. Assuming regulators in both states approve I&M’s plans, it’s hoped the new solar plants will be up and running by the end of 2027.
