Berrien County to seek second grant for Lakeview Trail project

The Berrien County Board of Commissioners is planning to seek additional support for the development of the Lakeview Trail, which is planned to run along M-63 near the Whirlpool headquarters and Harbor Shores. Commissioner Jim Curran told colleagues Thursday a resolution will come next week to seek another grant for the project.

“This is a resolution to apply for the Michigan DNR Trust Fund,” Curran said. “We already have applied for a TAP grant for 1.6 million. Whirlpool has put up $400,000. This would be for the remaining $300,000.”

Curran said the plan is for 2.5 miles of non-motorized trail between Higman Park Road and Monte Road along M-63. Eventually, the trail would make it possible for someone to ride a bicycle all the way from Harbor Shores or points beyond to the Whirlpool bike trails near the Monte Road property.
