Elementary students share why they love the Boys and Girls Club after school program

At the St. Joseph school board meeting Monday, E.P Clarke Elementary Principal Jesseca LaFayette showcased the school’s partnership with Boys and Girls Club of Greater Benton Harbor, with a little help from some students.

LaFayette says the club is at the school every day, with about 15 students participating in the program. Several of the students attended the meeting, and told the school board why they love the Boys and Girls Club.

“I love Boys and Girls Club because they make things that are hard easier  like math,” said one student. “I also love how they treat us all the same as equals. … I learned that just because you think something, doesn’t mean it’s true. This club is important to me because it s a way to get away and just be yourself.”

Other students highlighted the fun field trips they take, learning Taekwondo and learning individuality.

“I love the fact they give us tough love,” another student said. “I learned not to doubt yourself even when you’re having a hard time.”

Club Growth and Development Director Freddie Robinson, who has been with the club for 22 years, told board members as long as he’s a part of the program, he is going to make sure the kids have three things – safety, academics and fun.

“You do them three, you’re in good hands with me,” Robinson said. “Thank you for allowing us to work with your kids.”

The club’s St. Joseph Public Schools Site Director Trianna Sims said she joined the program when she was eight years old.

“My mom was a single parent, so having that support system not only academically but making sure we had healthy lifestyles,” Sims said. “Mr Freddie ran our healthy lifestyles portion, and wanted us to get active. … That’s exactly what we want to give to these young kids right here. This is a safe place – a safe space for you to enjoy and grow.”

LaFayette said the goal is to have 20 to 25 students participating in the program.
