Nye’s development proposal heads back to SJ Twp; public hearing set

Last October, plans for a new development at the Nye’s Apple Barn property in St. Joseph Charter Township were put on hold.

Residents packed the township hall to voice their opposition, and the township planning commission ultimately tabled the issue due to missing items on the planned unit development application.

On Jan. 17, developers will get another chance to put their proposal before the planning commission, and residents will get another chance to voice their opinions at a public hearing scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The proposed development – which would sit at the 12-acre property on Niles Road, just off I-94, Exit 27 – included plans for restaurants, a gas station, a convenience store and an apartment complex.

“[Developers] are resubmitting more complete information that was required of them last time,” said township Trustee Tom Milnikel, during Monday’s regular township board meeting. Milnikel also sits on the planning commission.
