Home Heating Help Is Available

As the temperatures drop and snowy weather looms, officials are worried about the ability for Michiganders in need to heat their homes this winter. Tanya Adair is chief people, equity, and engagement officer at United Way for Southeastern Michigan. She says rising inflation and effects from the COVID-19 pandemic are causing residents to have trouble heating their homes. The good news is there is help for those in need.

“Through the Michigan Energy Assistance Program, which we call MEAP, we provide energy assistance and self-sufficiency services to eligible low-income households. Self-sufficiency services include assisting people to pay their energy bill, the budgeting component, and helping plan for energy expenses.”

Adair says heating bills can have a major impact on household budgets. Any Michigan resident who needs help heating their home this winter can dial 2-1-1 to access support.
