A railroad strike could start this week if a deal isn’t reached between the unions representing railroad workers and freight carriers. Congressman Fred Upton tells us such a strike would be a disaster, and Congress may have to intervene soon.
“In fact, the House may take some action on Friday to try to avert this as it would have a terrible impact on the supply chain and everything else, particularly with the new on inflation earlier this week,” Upton said. “So, let’s hope Congress doesn’t have to act, but I think we’re prepared to do so if we get to that spot.”
A freight rail workers strike would greatly affect the supply chain at a time when it’s just starting to recover. Such a strike would also affect passenger rail travel due to the fact passenger lines also use freight lines. Upton says President Biden has been negotiating to prevent the strike, but it will be up to Congress if that fails. The last railroad strike in the U.S. was more than 30 years ago, and in that case, Congress also intervened.
