Commissioners Honor Charles Yarbrough

Former Benton Harbor Mayor Charles “Mickey” Yarbrough has been honored by the Berrien County Board of Commissioners, about a month after his death. Yarbrough died June 21 at the age of 82. At a meeting on Thursday, Berrien County Board of Commissioners Chair Mac Elliott read a resolution in Yarbrough’s honor.

“Now therefore be it hereby resolved that the Berrien County Board of Commissioners deems it appropriate to formally recognize and honor Charles L. “Mickey” Yarbrough, who spent a good portion of his life serving the citizens of the Benton Harbor community, the county of Berrien, and our country,” Elliott read.

Charles Yarbrough’s wife, Commissioner Mamie Yarbrough, thanked the county board for honoring her husband.

“Whatever he did, he did it the best he could and as long as he could,” Yarbrough said. “So, thank you all for this beautiful resolution.”

Charles Yarbrough was a Benton Harbor City Commissioner from 1971 to 2003, an Army veteran, and a juvenile probation officer from 1970 to 2001. There will be a memorial service for Yarbrough this Saturday at Charles L. Yarbrough Park in Benton Harbor at 4 p.m.
