One local brewery is asking for patrons to get rolling for a cause next weekend.
Sister Lakes Brewing Company is set to host a soap box derby event on Saturday, August 13th to benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center of Southwest Michigan, which is an organization dedicated to supporting victims of child sexual abuse.
“We tried to turn it into a philanthropic event,” said Co-Owner and Brewmaster Brian Morin. “It’s going to be a fun time and a party, but it’s also for a cause.”
Morin said the event will take place behind the brewery on a small county road.
“We worked with the township and county and the to close the road and make sure we have all the stuff needed to make it a fun, safe event,” Morin said. “The planning is all done, we’re just trying to get the word out to get more entries now.”
The entry fee per team is $30, and vehicles will be judged by speed, design and best jump in an optional jump contest. Rules include:
- Human powered or gravity powered machines only. No engines, stored power, or external energy such as catapults, batteries, gas, engines, afterburners or chain drives can be used.
- Bicycles, skateboards, prefab carts and other similar items are permitted as long as the chains/pedals have been disabled.
- Vehicles can’t be longer than 10 feet, wider than six feet or taller than eight feet.
- No breakable materials such as glass or porcelain.
- Helmets must be worn.
