Point Blank Shooting Range to close, auction property

Local residents will soon have one less place to learn firearm safety.

After 16 years in Benton Harbor, Point Blank Shooting Range is closing its doors. Owner Roy Daugherty said the plan is to close Tuesday, July 19 after a liquidation sale – with a land and building auction Monday, July 25.

Daugherty, who built the store at 1340 Territorial Road from the ground up, said the combination of COVID, ammunition prices, gas prices and his interest in other ventures went into the decision to close. As he reflected on his years at the helm, he said he was proud to have operated the store for as long as he did.

“It’s been a good business,” he said. “I think I helped a lot of people be safe with firearms, and that’s a good thing. We had the range, we had the [Range Safety Officers], we had classes for people. I can day at the end of the day, we helped a lot of people in 16 years.”

The gun range and Concealed Pistol License classes will remain open throughout the liquidation sale.

“Come in while you can while we’re still open to shoot and see the gun store and say goodbye,” Daugherty said. “Thank you for 16 years of business.”

While Daugherty is closing the store, he isn’t necessarily retiring. He said he has been farming, as well as thinking about opening a restaurant.

“Call me crazy,” Daugherty said. “I just had a meeting about the restaurant this morning.”

Daugherty said there were people interested in buying the property, but couldn’t get a bank loan. There will be a showing of the property Sunday, July 24 at 11 a.m. for those interested. The auction begins at 10 a.m. on July 25.
