A new community center is being launched in Harbor Country and organizers are now seeking community input to learn what kinds of programming should be offered. Harbor Country Community Center Leader Katie Maroney tells WSJM News they don’t have a building yet, but are working with the YMCA to start offering programming next year. She wants the new community center to serve Berrien County from the Indiana state line up to Bridgman and Baroda.
“We’re kind of in what I would consider a dry zone for wellness,” Maroney said. “There actually are no doctor’s offices within – I would say – 20 minutes of the New Buffalo, Three Oaks region, as well as affordable childcare options. Most are waitlisted and full.”
Maroney says an online survey has been launched to learn about the area’s demographics and needs. It will be open through Labor Day and everyone’s asked to fill it out to help ensure the Harbor Country Community Center serves local needs when it launches. You can find the survey at HarborCountryCommunityCenter.org.
