Forest Bathing is a popular form of ecotherapy that began in the 1980s, as an outlet for those experiencing tech burnout and the need to reconnect to the outdoors. Karen Joy, farmer, artist, and steward of the earth, has been leading Nature & Forest Therapy Guided sessions since last Fall, and is offering a chance for the public to connect to the natural world and each other. On Earth Day, Friday, April 22nd, join Karen as she invites attendees to explore, play, and interact with the forest and land.
A collaboration between Handsoewn, Karen’s latest venture and business, and Come & See Farm in Berrien Springs, this event will guide you to connect with your senses and work on being present in nature. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the non-profit farm, to support the learning programs offered by Come & See. These programs focus on educating children and families through home-based agricultural activities, like traditional farming methods and caring for the earth.
“These past few years have been traumatic and continue to be so, for many people in our community and all around the world. Our connections to each other and to the Earth have been greatly challenged,” says Karen. “Every attendee will have their own unique experience, and as a guide, I hold the safe space for them to explore their outer and inner worlds”.
Tea and treats will follow the session, as well group sharing and expressing gratitude for what nature has provided during the experience. Attendees will also receive a Shagbark Hickory seed to plant, to add life while celebrating Earth Day.
Karen established a small, USDA Certified Organic Farm in Southwest Michigan in 2009, and has worked within the community on a number of events. Last season, she partnered with Water & Wheat Chef Josh Musinski, and held a pop-up farm market at his Coloma location.
“This event marks the Grand Opening of my Nature & Forest Therapy session offerings (locally), providing an opportunity for those seeking a deeper connection to the Earth and the many support systems she provides: healing body, mind and spirit,” Karen tells us. Last year, she led sessions at a botanical garden in California.
