Automakers Shipping Vehicles Without Some Microchips

Ford is going to be sending some of its Explorer SUVs to customers without the computer chip that controls some heating and air conditioning. Customers who take ownership of the vehicles will get a price reduction. Auto analyst John McElroy told Michigan News Network Ford has been losing production without the chips.

“What Ford has done is it’s just lost a lot of production,” McElroy said. “It just didn’t build a lot of vehicles because it couldn’t get enough chips. So, probably now, the company decided, ‘Look, we’ve got to start moving the metal here. We need the cash flow coming in, and we’ll be able to retrofit these things in in a year or so.’ At least that’s what the plan looks to be right now.”

McElroy says Ford isn’t the only automaker shipping vehicles without the chips. GM started doing it last year.
