The Michigan State Police says their recent addition of state troopers, working alongside Benton Harbor and Benton Township Police and crime prevention officers, is already showing results on the streets of the City and Township. Fewer instances of shooting and violence are being reported, according to MSP.
Here’s a Michigan State Police statement, updating their efforts:
Responding to an uptick in gun violence in early August, MSP added 5-7 additional troopers to work alongside the DCPS to double down on its efforts to help reduce and prevent violent crime in the communities of Benton Harbor and Benton Township. The response also continues to be a collective partnership with Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety (BHDPS) and Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.
Anecdotally, the increased resources appear to have been effective since mobilizing on August 11. Reports from officers and detectives working the communities have been very encouraging. Gun violence and reported shootings have slowed down considerably and on several days, there were reports of no violent or significant activity. MSP will stand by its commitment to maintain its current staffing level but will continue to evaluate conditions and make adjustments accordingly.
During the month of August, which includes the additional troopers, four firearms were confiscated resulting in the arrest of three suspects and apprehension of one juvenile. Methamphetamine, heroin, and crack cocaine was also seized resulting in multiple drug arrests. On August 8, troopers assisted BHDPS with a homicide investigation at the Sunny Spot gas station where a male subject was shot by a suspect inside the store.
In summary, arrests were made for the following:
- Three – carrying concealed weapon and other felony violations
- One – juvenile apprehended for carrying concealed weapon
- Two – possession with intent to deliver felony drugs
- One – resisting & obstructing police officer
- Four – felony warrants satisfied, including one for possession of meth, one for stolen property and two for assault
Community engagement efforts over the course of the last month primarily consisted of supporting the city of Benton Harbor’s local government and the faith-based community’s “21 Days of Peace” initiative.
