A ‘rock’-ing new business has opened up in Coloma that wants to feature a unique way to turn your location into a local landmark. Boulder Designs by TJH creates custom boulder signs that can be made into almost any size, shape, or color to mark your business, enhance your landscape, or memorialize a location. You may have already seen their work as you pass through downtown Coloma and notice the big boulder sign with an LED display located in the center of the city’s downtown.
The owners, Todd and Jodi Hammond, franchised the business in late 2019 after learning about the technique from a family member who worked for the parent company, which is headquartered in Waco, TX.
“I have always liked building things and when I learned about the technique it seemed like something I would enjoy, that was also a good business opportunity. I also could see this would be something unique for the area that I could teach my children and build upon it as a local family business,” says Todd.
Every piece is custom made locally from Portland Cement and sand. Different colors and sealers can be used to create a one-of-a-kind look. The boulders can be used in many applications from commercial monument signage, to landscape enhancement, and more.
“The sky’s the limit,” laughs Todd. “We can create almost anything. We have done large signs for businesses, and small ones to mark home addresses. We can display a family name, an established date at a property, and can make boulder signs for farms that keep with the landscape. We create these to look more like a monument than a sign, which is needed because signs are not usually allowed in rural areas.”
Todd and Jodi have lived in the area for almost their whole lives and were especially drawn to the design because of the way boulder signs add to the landscape. By providing a marker that still has a natural look, they could see the benefit of how they could fit in with the area’s natural elements and landscaping.
Todd also notes that these signs don’t succumb to the elements the way other signs can because they don’t degrade, experience rot like wood can tend to do, or rust like metal. Because of their design materials, they also do not fade very easily.
