If M-139 between Benton Harbor and Berrien Springs is on your daily commute this summer, get ready for a detour immediately following the holiday weekend ahead.
The Michigan Department of Transportation tells us that M-139 will close at Rocky Weed Road beginning next Tuesday, July 6th for the replacement of a culvert at Buckhorn Creek, leading to a detour around the construction site in Berrien County.
The $1.8-million project to replace the box culvert under M-139 at Buckhorn Creek just north of Rocky Weed Road is not expected to be completed until the end of September according to MDOT.
Work on the project includes rebuilding a quarter mile of M-139, concrete curb and gutter replacement, and grading and restoration work, as well as drainage, guardrail, and sign upgrades.
The project is designed to improve erosion issues and the drainage path for Buckhorn Creek, as well as the sight distance for motorists on M-139.
MDOT says there will be traffic restrictions along M-139 throughout the project, and while businesses and driveways will remain open and accessible to local traffic, there will be detours posted for all through traffic.
You can expect to be detoured around the project area on Linco Road, Hollywood Road, and John Beers Road.
All I-94 traffic heading to M-139 will be detoured to Napier Avenue, east to US-31, then south to M-139. All US-31 traffic heading to M-139 will be detoured north on US-31, west on Napier Avenue, then west on I-94 to M-139.
Share this information with people you know who travel that route about the disruptions coming for the balance of the summer up through September 30th if the project remains on schedule.
