Car-Semi Rear-End Crash Takes the Life of a Berrien Springs Woman

A Berrien Springs woman was killed when the car she was a passenger in slammed into the rear end of a semi hauling a fertilizer tank that was parked along the side of Rangeline Road with emergency flashers activated shortly after 2pm Thursday afternoon.

Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Joshua Sutherland says his department was called out minutes after 2pm to the scene of the crash on Rangeline Road in Buchanan Township and found a silver Mazda CX5 had rear-ended the International semi pulled to the side of the southbound lane of the roadway.

The 33 year old Berrien Springs driver of the Mazda was unable to avoid the collision, and his 32 year old front seat passenger from Berrien Springs died at the scene, according to Sutherland’s report.

The truck driver, a 62-year old Buchanan man was apparently unhurt in the crash which remains under investigation by the Berrien County Accident Investigation team. Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Accident Investigation team, the Berrien County Hazmat team, Michigan State Police, Buchanan City Police, Buchanan Firefighters and SMCAS Ambulance.
