A 19 year old Benton Township man ended up being in the wrong place at the wrong time as he was tragically gunned down in the parking lot of the Phillips 66 Gas Station in the 1100-block of Pipestone Road late last night, as police continue the search for his killer.
Benton Township Police Detective Lt. Michael DenDooven says that 19-year old Taj Carter was raced to Spectrum Health Lakeland shortly before midnight where life-saving measures were administered to no avail as he died of the gunshot wounds received when a 4-door sedan rolling through the parking lot firing shots, striking Carter.
Police say that the shooter or shooters then drove into the night and they are asking anyone with information on the incident to contact the Benton Township Detective Bureau or Crime Stoppers to help the investigation.
Authorities are searching for a red 4-door sedan which left the scene in an unknown direction following the incident first reported shortly after 11pm last night at the service station located at 1117 Pipestone Road in Benton Harbor.
Carter was shot in the chest during the incident, and police have appealed to the community for help in tracking the killer. Those with information can call the Detective Bureau at 269-925-1135 or Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.
